Tearaway – Crafting a World of Paper and Sound
After Papo & Yo, Media Molecule approached me in 2013 to explore a collaboration on Tearaway. Their vision was a folk-inspired score that felt like it was created by the inhabitants of its handcrafted paper world. To push this idea further, I took an experimental approach—building instruments entirely out of paper before even writing a single note.
I tested everything from handmade Japanese rice paper to cardboard drums, searching for the right sound. To expand the sonic palette, I also worked with expert instrument makers, including a Brazilian percussionist and a Peruvian shaman, both specializing in crafting instruments from natural materials. Their knowledge helped shape a collection of unique drums, stringed instruments, and horns that felt deeply connected to Tearaway’s world. To complement this, I incorporated rare baroque folk instruments—from English crumhorns to a custom-built hurdy-gurdy—bringing an old-world charm to the score.
Together with co-composer Kenny Young, we crafted an interactive score that became an integral part of Tearaway’s world. After a year of composing and refining, the music was seamlessly integrated into the game. Seeing it resonate with audiences was incredibly rewarding, leading to a BAFTA nomination for Best Music and Best Handheld Audio at the GANG Awards among many more. The soundtrack was also performed live in Sweden, England, and Canada—an unforgettable experience that paved the way for future projects like Resident Evil 7 and LittleBigPlanet 3.
Tearaway was later expanded and re-released for PS4 as Tearaway Unfolded, earning further critical acclaim and solidifying its place as one of Media Molecule’s most beloved creations.
