Tearaway Music

Brian composed the music of Tearaway in a fruitful collaboration with Kenny Young, Head of Audio at Media Molecule.

Tearaway won 3 BAFTA Awards in 2014 for Best Artistic Achievement, Best Family Game, and Best Mobile and Handeld. As well as a G.A.N.G. Award for Best Handheld Audio and a IGN Award for Best PS Vita Sound.  It was also nominated for a BAFTA for Best Game Music, two Annual Game Music Awards for Best Soundtrack and Outstanding Achievement for In-Game Music, and a GDC Award for Best Audio.

Creating music for a universe made of paper meant that the music had to, in general, feel handmade, folky (with hints of mashup) and true to the playful and childlike visual style and character in the game. At the same time, the music needed to progress with the story and be constantly changing as the character journeys through each level, in a world that is constantly re-inventing itself. Enhancing a game like Tearaway is no mean feat, when working with such a talented team as the folks at Media Molecule.

Using a combination of self-made paper instruments, as well as rare medieval and baroque instrumentation, Brian and Kenny composed and performed all of the music by themselves, coming up with sometimes wacky, yet brilliant music that some people have termed ‘Folk-Step’.
